With great pride and deep appreciation, the Sigma Chi Dallas Alumni Chapter announces that their scholarship fund for The L. Wayne Tucker Jordan Standard Leadership Scholarship, has surpassed the $100K mark! It is the only scholarship created by one of the Sigma Chi alumni chapters, and it reached this $100K milestone in roughly just 2 1/2 years!
The inception of the scholarship was to memorialize and honor 66th Grand Consul, Order of Constantine and Significant Sig Wayne Tucker, BAYLOR 1985, for his over 36 years of exemplary leadership as a Sigma Chi brother. The goal in creating this award was to build a scholarship endowment that will provide scholarships to worthy brothers, in perpetuity. In the fall of 2022, Brother Larry Foster, East Texas A&M University 1967, proposed the formation of this scholarship to the Dallas Alumni Chapter’s Executive Committee, on which Foster was serving. It was an easy decision to embrace the idea, and Larry chaired the committee to determine how to best create such a scholarship fund. The Sigma Chi Foundation assisted the DAC in the creation of the fund, and in November 2022 the scholarship fundraising began. The DAC now has an annual golf tournament held in the spring: The DAC Wayne Tucker Memorial Golf Tournament. Over $30,000 total has been raised from proceeds of the 2024 and 2025 tournaments, and roughly 70-80 golfers plus 20+ sponsors have participated each year.
In honor of Wayne Tucker’s influence and legacy, once endowed at $25,000, the intent was to select and award an undergraduate brother who exhibits the seven characteristics of the Jordan Standard of Sigma Chi, with zeal and fervor. The award would initially be for one undergraduate from a Texas college to be chosen to for a $1,000 award for his college or chapter expenses. By summer of 2023, the fund surpassed the minimum endowment amount and actually topped $50,000 — an amount affording the ability to provide two young undergrads $1,000 scholarship awards. Trey Hornsby, UT-Austin, and Carson Cooper, UNT were the young men who were selected from dozens of worthy, impressive applications. In the summer of 2024, the fund had not yet reached the next plateau amount for a 3rd scholarship, but once again, two young undergrads were chosen to receive the DAC $1,000 scholarship: Joel Cummings, Stephen F. Austin State University), and Corbin Bulger, Tarleton State University. Hundreds of scholarship applications are being reviewed as of July 2025, and the DAC Executive Committee will soon announce that two undergrads will receive a $1500 scholarship award for this fall. (The fund balance was just under $100,000 at the start of the scholarship application process, and the DAC Executive Committee voted to award two $1500 scholarships rather than three $1000 awards, due to the rising costs of tuition and fees.) In the summer of 2026, we will have at least $4,000 with which to award, so a decision will be made at that time how many undergrads will be awarded, and how much the awards will be.
As a life member of the Sigma Chi Dallas Alumni Chapter, Brother Tucker was significantly instrumental in every facet of Sigma Chi. Upon initiation at the Eta Omega chapter at Baylor University in 1985, Wayne launched a career of undying service to our fraternity in numerous capacities. He truly served the International Fraternity, highlighted by serving in volunteer positions as Chapter Advisor, Grand Praetor, Dean of the Praetorial College, Grand Quaestor, Grand Pro Consul, member of the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee, and countless other duties to which Sigma Chi was the beneficiary. Wayne’s service and leadership were highlighted as the 66th Grand Consul (2009-2011), Order of Constantine Sig and Significant Sig. In Brother Tucker’s fifty-eight plus years, he made the most of his skills and vast knowledge to make those around him always proud to be a Sigma Chi.
The Sigma Chi Dallas Alumni Chapter is focused on honoring Brother L. Wayne Tucker, Jr., with this scholarship award annually and will seek to further develop the award as funds are available. We endeavor to make this a substantial contribution for worthy undergraduates going forward and expand the number of recipients as financial participation allows.
